Jean E. Bogner, PhD, President Technical support for commercial landfill gas recovery projects, including Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in developing countries. Applied research on landfill processes, including landfill gas emissions and oxidation. Technical support and marketing for Gas Technology Products/Merichem, Schaumburg, Illinois. Coordinating Lead Author, IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), Working Group III (Mitigation), Chapter 10-Waste. |
ExperienceMore than 25 years experience and more than 60 publications related to landfill gas, landfill processes, and solid waste. An internationally-recognized expert on landfill gas (LFG) recovery, utilization, and mitigation of emissions, she provides technical assistance for commercial LFG recovery projects and environmental impacts of landfilling processes. A 20-year employee of Argonne National Laboratory, Dr. Bogner worked with U.S. Dept. of Energy and private sector programs for the commercial implementation of landfill gas recovery since the earliest days of the technology during the 1970's. She also developed and implemented numerous field and laboratory research programs to better understand landfill methane generation in situ, the landfill methane mass balance in field settings, long term carbon storage in landfill settings, microbial methane oxidation as a complementary strategy to active gas extraction for emission reductions, field settings where landfill cover soils function as sinks for atmospheric methane, and emission/oxidation rates of non-methane organic compounds in landfill cover materials. Since founding Landfills +, Inc. in 1997, Dr. Bogner has continued to work with the commercial, research, and policy aspects of landfilling and landfill gas recovery, including global landfill methane emissions, specialized treatment processes for landfill gas, international policy and regulatory review, design of landfill biocovers, and the development of landfill methane Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in developing countries. Dr. Bogner lectures frequently at international research workshops, commercial and research conferences, and universities. She is also an adjunct associate professor at the University of Illinois Chicago (www.uic.edu/depts/geos) and a special term appointee at Argonne National Laboratory. She has served on numerous international committees under the International Energy Agency (IEA), International Global Atmospheric Chemistry/International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGAC/IGBP), and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). During the period 2004-2007, she is the Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) for the Waste Management chapter for the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), Working Group III [Mitigation]. Positions Held
